Kate Collins Middle School
Waynesboro City Public Schools
This 800-student middle school is the only middle school serving sixth through ninth graders in Waynesboro. Located on a 22-acre site near neighborhoods and retail businesses the existing school building, built in 1964, will be completely renovated and expanded to better serve the teachers, the students and the greater community. Extensive upgrades will occur throughout the two-story building enhancing the learning and teaching environments. Neighborhoods will be created for each grade level adding two dedicated science classroom/labs, computer labs, resource classrooms, teacher workrooms, conference rooms, and separate staff and student toilets. A new administrative suite will triple the size of the current office area adding a new entrance lobby, conference room, staff offices and plenty of storage. A dedicated guidance suite and dedicated clinic suite will be connected to the main administrative area, but have separate entrances to improve student access and improve traffic flow in these areas.
An expanded and renovated media center, to be located on the lower level, will feature state-of-the-art technology, along with a new health education classroom, band and choir rooms, and dressing rooms. The existing auxiliary gym will be converted to an art studio with access to an outdoor plaza. A comprehensive vocational/applied science and technology center will also be created.
The existing gymnasium will remain a gym to be used for special education students, the community and other school activities. A new full-size gymnasium with spectator seating for 800 will serve the school and the greater community. Renovations in the cafeteria include the removal of the stage and an upgraded kitchen and the serving and seating environment. A new 400-seat auditorium will be a major highlight of the new Kate Collins Middle School. Not only expanding the music and performing arts at the school, the auditorium will be a wonderful addition to the Waynesboro community.
