Maury River Middle School

Rockbridge County, Virginia

This 600-student middle school combines students from Maury River Middle School and Rockbridge Middle School and will result in the closing of Rockbridge Middle. Located on an existing 17-acre site adjacent business and residential occupancies within the city limits of Lexington, Virginia, the existing school building has been completely renovated and added to accommodate 6-8th grade students. Extensive renovations occurred within the existing two-story structure which accommodates classrooms, administration and auxiliary gymnasium. The existing gymnasium remains a gym and a new full-size gym with spectator seating for 800 serves the school and the greater community for athletic events, conferences and emergency shelter. Additions include new gymnasium, media center, band, science classrooms, computer labs, food service, agriculture shops, auto shops, technical education, family life program, greenhouses, outdoor classrooms and support spaces.

The existing Maury River Middle School required occupancy throughout construction, therefore facilitating the need of a construction phasing plan that was determined and defined during design. The phasing plan required four phases of construction.

The entire school is heated and cooled utilizing a geothermal ground-source heat pump system. Energy efficient equipment, lighting and building construction materials and methods will significantly reduce the operating cost for this school in the future.
