Plan the expansion of a culinary school program beyond its current historic facility

Claude Moore Education Complex

As a specialized program established between the Roanoke Higher Education Authority and Virginia Western Community College, this expanded complex features new flexible state-of –the-art culinary teaching environments. At the heart of the addition are three multi-student kitchens for teaching and demonstrations. Located in the business district of a historically African-American neighborhood, the building responds to its neighborhood context by translating elements from adjacent structures into a new composition that is both modern and yet familiar.

“They [the kitchens] aren’t nice, they are unbelievable. They are first class, they are world class. And what we are going to be doing is offering this region the best of everything when it comes to hospitality management, culinary arts.”

– Dr. Robert Sandel, President, Virginia Western Community College

“Spectrum Design, your creativity is exemplary.”
