Roanoke Academy of Mathematics and Science

Located in an urban, residential neighborhood, the new school was constructed on a 27-acre park adjacent to the existing school. Roanoke Academy of Mathematics and Science (RAMS) marked the first newly constructed school facility for Roanoke City Public Schools in 30 years. The STEM-focused magnet school now accommodates 550+ students ranging from Pre-K through fifth grade and houses the City’s REACH program for students with disabilities or developmental delays. Architectural elements from surrounding houses were incorporated into the exterior design, and interior elements include diagrams and patterns depict various breakthroughs in science. The forward thinking building was awarded the Best New Elementary School by the Virginia School Board Association as well as other accolades since it opened in 2005.
