Transform an existing, underutilized common space into a vibrant and inviting gathering area for students.
Virginia Tech: Payne HallĀ
With the University’s focus on creating Living Learning Communities, common areas of Payne Hall were renovated with a focus on Wellness. At the heart of the lounge area is a new demonstration kitchen with a large cooking island where chefs teach cooking techniques and promote healthy food choices. Existing masonry walls into an adjacent classroom space were removed and replaced with glass storefront to increase daylighting and views. The resulting room is now used as a flexible classroom/meeting space, and for group activities including regular yoga sessions. The interior palette is durable and yet warm, inviting, and natural while also providing a virtually seamless transition with the existing finishes that remained in adjacent areas.
